Jun 28, 2018 7:49 AM

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran Brandon Phillips to a Minor League deal.

"He is reporting to Florida to get himself in playing shape," Dave Dombrowski said. "Once he has accomplished that, he will join [Triple-A] Pawtucket."

Phillips hasn't played in the Major Leagues this season. He will play second and third and will take some grounders at first for the Red Sox.

Dombrowski said Phillips has "numerous" opt-outs in the contract.

ESPN Asks Whether Bryce Harper Is Playing Himself Out Of $400M

Jun 18, 2018 2:31 PM

Bryce Harper leads the National League with 19 home runs and is on pace for 98 runs and 102 RBIs, but he's hitting just .217 for the Washington Nationals.

Harper hit .315 with eight home runs in his first 17 games, but is hitting .188/.308/.392 since.

He was expected to command a $400 million contract as a free agent, but his value may be decreasing.

Harper is pulling more ground balls, his walk rate has decreased and his chase rate is up this season.

John Lackey Rejected Minor League Deal With Diamondbacks

Jun 14, 2018 8:01 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks offered John Lackey a minor league deal this past winter, but he rejected it.

The offer came with no guarantee that Lackey would earn a spot in the starting rotation.

The spot eventually went to Clay Buchholz.

"I don't bring that up to him now," Buchholz says, "because he's a lot bigger than me. I don't want to make him mad. But Lackey is a bulldog. I fully expect him to be with some club at some point this year. I know for a fact that he still works out and keeps his body ready.

"But I also know he's enjoying his life, too."

Mike Trout is signed through the 2020 season and the Los Angeles Angels would like to ink him to an extension before he hits the open market.

Trout was asked by the Los Angeles Times if he'd consider signing a new deal if the Angels don't make the playoffs this season or next.

"I don't know the answer," Trout said. "I want to get to the playoffs. That's my mindset. I can't predict the future. So I just take it one game at a time now and see what happens."

Trout, who turns 27 in August, is hitting .299/.431/.632 (192 OPS+) with 19 home runs and 39 RBI in 66 games.

Rangers Release Tim Lincecum

Jun 6, 2018 8:59 AM

The Texas Rangers have released Tim Lincecum.

Lincecum was signed by the Rangers in March.

He has been working his way back from a blister that he suffered in spring training. His 30-day rehab period ended Tuesday, meaning the Rangers had to activate him, keep him on the disabled list indefinitely, send him to the minors or release him.

"Despite best intentions and a lot of hard work, we just didn't feel that it was the right move to bring him up right now," Jon Daniels said. "He was throwing OK, still kind of inconsistent with this command. We just were not of the mindset that it was going to be an upgrade on our relievers who are here. Our bullpen's been very, very good here."
